Predictive Inference Using Latent Variables with Covariates.

چکیده
Plausible values (PVs) are a standard multiple imputation tool for analysis of large education survey data, which measures latent proficiency variables. When latent proficiency is the dependent variable, we reconsider the standard institutionally generated PV methodology and find it applies with greater generality than shown previously. When latent proficiency is an independent variable, we show that the standard institutional PV methodology produces biased inference because the institutional conditioning model places restrictions on the form of the secondary analysts' model. We offer an alternative approach that avoids these biases based on the mixed effects structural equations model of Schofield (Modeling measurement error when using cognitive test scores in social science research. Bayesian modeling of embryonic growth using latent variables.
In a growth model, individuals move progressively through a series of states in which each state is indicative of developmental status. Interest lies in estimating the rate of progression through each state while incorporating covariates that might affect the transition rates. We develop a Bayesian discrete-time multistate growth model for inference from cross-sectional data with unknown initia...
متن کاملAsymptotic inference about predictive accuracy using high frequency data
This paper provides a general framework that enables many existing inference methods for predictive accuracy to be used in applications that involve forecasts of latent target variables. Such applications include the forecasting of volatility, correlation, beta, quadratic variation, jump variation, and other functionals of an underlying continuous-time process. We provide primitive conditions u...
متن کاملNatural Gradients via the Variational Predictive Distribution
Variational inference transforms posterior inference into parametric optimization thereby enabling the use of latent variable models where it would otherwise be impractical. However, variational inference can be finicky when different variational parameters control variables that are strongly correlated under the model. Traditional natural gradients that use the variational approximation fail t...
متن کاملIdentifiability of extended latent class models with individual covariates
Identifiability for a very flexible family of latent class models introduced recently is examined. These models allow for a conditional association between selected pairs of response variables conditionally on the latent and are based on logistic regression models both for the latent weights and for the conditional distributions of the response variables in terms of subject specific covariates....
متن کاملSimultaneous equations models for discrete outcomes: coherence, completeness, and identication
This paper studies simultaneous equations models for two or more discrete outcomes. The models allow latent variables to be high dimensional and require latent variables and covariates to be independently distributed. The models may be incoherent, delivering no values of the outcomes at certain values of the latent variables and covariates. The models may be incomplete, delivering more than one...
